Isn't it true that nowadays stories reflecting human nature at its best are increasingly rare? I'd like to share an article originally published in The Guardian; amid so many urgent headlines, I came across a story that perhaps deserves a moment of your time.

A winning lottery ticket worth 1 million euros was recovered from a landfill after the desperate winner called waste collection services to ask for their help, according to the company responsible for waste management in Italy.

The woman, whose identity remains anonymous, always played the same number for sentimental reasons. When she went on Saturday to cash her ticket at the shop where she had purchased it, the machine displayed a message indicating it could not be redeemed there, as small retailers can only pay out minor prizes. She hadn't realised she had won the Grand Prize.

Upon returning home, a family member told her that her number had won. They rushed back to the shop, only to discover that the ticket had already been collected by the garbage truck.

Desperate, she called Roberto Nicola Toscano, administrator of SANB, the waste management company serving the region of Puglia. His team reconstructed the route of the truck and, with a stroke of luck, managed to identify and stop the vehicle carrying it. Due to the danger involved in handling waste, the truck was taken to a specialised facility to conduct a thorough search.

It took the workers an entire day sifting through mountains of rubbish. Among various objects, they found the ticket: intact, miraculously.

When they broke the news to her, the woman burst into tears. Toscano recalled: "I would have hugged her, but we were on the phone."

Toscano noted that the costs of this search should not fall upon taxpayers, so the winner signed a commitment to cover them herself. Beyond the economics of it all.

What would things look like if this attitude were the norm rather than the exception?
