"I have run through a course of many births looking for the maker of this dwelling, and not finding him. Birth anew is painful again and again.
Oh maker of the dwelling, you are seen! You shall not make a dwelling again. All your beams have been broken, the ridgepole is destroyed. My mind is freed from all conditioning factors; I have attained the destruction of craving."
– Buda
  • Nepal: A Land That Stays in the Heart

There are places that, once visited, stay in your heart forever. Nepal is one of them. This small country brings together breathtaking geography: from fertile plains to eight of the ten highest mountains in the world. It is also a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and multicultural state, where the influences of Tibet and the Indo-Aryan world blended for centuries in the prosperous Kathmandu Valley: the heart of the ancient Nepal Mandala and a crossroads of the legendary Himalayan Silk Road.

These images speak of its rich cultural and spiritual heritage, of a way of understanding life that deserves to be known and respected. To photograph means to look, and sometimes, not to look away from what hurts. That is why this space is also an invitation to solidarity with the communities affected by the floods, and with the organizations working on the ground to help with emergency relief and reconstruction.

  • The Strength of Its People

Its foreign policy, marked by neutrality and multilateral cooperation, has made Nepal an actor for peace in South Asia: a member of the United Nations since 1955, a founding member of SAARC — whose permanent secretariat it hosts in Kathmandu — and part of the Non-Aligned Movement. Friendship treaties with India (1950) and China (1960) reflect its delicate balance between two great neighbors. Nepalis are known for their genuine hospitality ("Atithi Devo Bhava", the guest is god), their serene calm, and remarkable resilience forged by centuries of life in unforgiving mountains. There is a strong sense of community and family, deep spirituality woven into everyday life, and the famous smile that has made the expression namaste renowned worldwide. The Gurkha people, recognized around the world for their bravery, embody that blend of humility and strength.

"Were there nothing else in Nepal, save the Durbar Square of Bhaktapur, it would still be amply worth making a journey half-way round the globe to see"

– Sir Edwin Arnold
